The site is located 5 km from the city of Sparta and is directed by Dr. Stavros Vlizos. This sanctuary was the first organized religious sanctuary in Greece. The festival that once took place at this sanctuary was the most important Spartan festival. It allowed for political reconciliation between Sparta and the people of Amyclae. It was in addition an important trading sight and many materials discovered here such as bronze were sourced from different areas.
